Week 3

June 10, 2016

The goals set for our project this week were to :

  • Submit Facebook Permissions
  • Submit IRB
  • Finalize Specific Methods
  • Revise and Complete Related work
  • Begin Practice Coding in My SQL

Monday and Tuesday

On Monday we (Fernando, Grace and I) had a meeting with Professor Patrick Shih were we discussed questions pertaining to the IRB, set goals for the week and coding. The meeting went smoothly and felt like a great way to start off the busy week.
Facebook Permissions
On Monday we discovered that Facebook wanted the permissions submitted in a more specific manor than we had expected. In order to gain the Facebook permissions, we will have to provide Facebook with screen casts for each individual permission. The definition of a screen cast via Google.com is
“a digital recording of computer screen output, also known as a video screen capture, often containing audio narration.” Initially we believed that providing Facebook with Academic evidence and citations of the use of the permissions would be sufficient enough to gain approval.

  • Next Week: we plan on creating some type of mock-trial of our application so that we may provide Facebook with the screen cast.

After discovering this, we also began a search for free/cost effective screen cast software. So far we are unsuccessful in finding one, but we plan on extending our searches.
On For the remainder of Monday and Tuesday we began refreshing our coding skills so that we could begin coding in mySQL. We both already had knowledge on how to code in HTML/CSS but felt as though it was necessary to refresh on some of the material.

Wednesday and Thursday
We sharpened our skills in HTML and  CSS but also needed to learn PHP.  We used online coding sites such as Code Academy and W3Schools to help us do this. These sites were free to sign up and I feel as though they were definitely worth the time. I also notice that these sites offer other languages such as Java, so I made a note to myself to come back and learn  some more coding languages.

We also worked on revising our previous related work outline/draft on Wednesday and Thursday. The meeting with our mentor provided us with more specific areas of interest, there fore we found more related work on those things. So far we feel as though our related work looks good but also understand that we could make add even more information if necessary. Along with these revisions , we also edited our methods including procedures as well and drafted out our outline of the introduction.

The Wednesday workshop was pretty beneficial when it came to this weeks deliverable. I initially didn’t realize it could be possible to fit so much information into an introduction without diving to deep. But the speakers we had did a very good job in expressing how to do this successfully.  We took their tips into consideration as we drafted our outline which helped  a lot!

Next Week

Our biggest goal for next week is to find a solution to how we may submit our permission request to Facebook. We really need to do this so that we can move forward with building the application, since we can’t really do this unless we have all the components of the application accessible. Hopefully we can begin the application building process soon!
