About week 2

Hello all,

This past week has been a productive week. We finally started working on our projects. Gabi and I are working with Tom, James, and Patrick on researching patients that suffer simultaneously from type 2 diabetes and at least another chronic condition such as depression, arthritis, etc. This week started by reading papers. Gabi and I read around 30 papers. This was done with the purpose of investigating the related work that has been done in the area in order to get familiar with methods used and results found so far. As the week progressed, Gabi and I started working on summaries of the papers we read. Also, we started working on the outlines for our related work and our methods. We used sharelatex so we can work on it together at the same time as well as share it with our mentor Tom and with Dr. Siek. These two outlines were the deliverables for this week, and they have been finished. Our team also started analyzing the data that Tom had collected. First went through all the transcripts of the patients’ interview and segmented it, identifying strategies that diabetes patients with multimorbidities use to cope with their conditions. After we finished segmenting, we started color-coding the segments in order to organize the strategies. We finished color-coding yesterday, and today we cut all the segments from the transcripts, and started grouping the categories of strategies. Today we also had our weekly meeting with the whole ProHealth REU students and some of the mentors. We discussed what we did during the week, as well as the plans for the upcoming week. People also shared the fashion comebacks.

In the upcoming week, Gabi and I plan to start working on the actual draft for our related work and our methods, as well as on the outline for the introduction. We also plan to work on our affinity diagram on Monday, that is the next step in our project. The plan for the rest of the project this summer goes as follows:

      • W3- Affinity diagrams, polish themes, create codes, start dedoose, & joint meeting with faculty to discuss themes.
      • W4- Segmenting, affinity diagrams, themes, & draft IRB (Health care providers)
      • W5- polish themes, dedoose, joint meeting, design focus group study.
      • W6-Conduct focus group study, segment, affinity diagrams, themes, codes, design PD (take specialization for CHI students competition)
      • W7-analyze the prototypes and start creating wireframes
      • W8-Writing
      • W9-Writing
      • W10-Submissions

We I am very excited about this project and I look forward to see all the we can accomplish.

Until next time.
